Who’s in Charge?

How often do you make a plan and it falls through? How often do things not go the way you envisioned them?

We spend an awful lot of our time making plans for the future. We think that planning makes things safer, easier maybe.

I have been planning my life for forever. This last year I’ve really been planning. I’ve had my heart, mind, eyes, soul set on this one thing. I have tried to plan every detail and remove all doubt. Recently though, those plans were changed, put on the shelf, different. They evolved. In those moments I could feel it happening. I could feel God as if to say I’ve got this. Open up and trust me. Over a year of planning this thing and in one instance every thing changed. When I say that I had been planning I mean hours on top of hours of preparation had gone into this thing. And then, just like that, God steps in and says, “Hey, if you don’t mind I’m going to change it up a bit, will you trust me?”

A week after the plan changed I came across this verse.

In their hearts humans plan their course,
but the Lord establishes their steps.

Proverbs 16:9

Here’s what I think is so impactful about my situation, God was in it from the start. My original plan was steeped in scripture and tons of prayer. I was following God’s plan. It was not as if I was separate in the beginning and now I am closer or more dialed in. It was Him who pushed me to plan in the first place. The key is being open and flexible. While I was planning all of these things, God was giving me one step at a time and it just happened that the next step was in a different direction. At that point a choice has to be made. Will I keep going like I was or will I trust God and move with Him?

I started reading a book that follows the same theme. It is about giving God the freedom to show us one step at a time. That means sacrificing control. Some people find this more difficult than others but one way or another we all struggle with it.

So I will leave you with this quote from the Mike Donehey’s Finding God’s life for my will, “Before God gives us what we want, He changes what we want, until He is all we want.”

Can you give up control? Will you let God lead?
